While many consumer-driven industries are ripe for disruption – or more positively put – have the opportunity to innovate and evolve… the healthcare industry is certainly at the front and centre of this globally. And with almost a tenth of Australian GDP currently spent on healthcare, the local opportunities for evolution, innovation and growth are ripe.
With this in mind, our infographic this week, produced by Northeastern University D’Amore-McKim School of Business highlights healthcare startups and entrepreneurs shaping the future of the industry
It breaks down ‘the ones to watch’ into four groups across, genomics, healthcare apps, medical products and healthcare platforms. Some of the more notable healthcare startups and solutions include:
- FoundationOne – A genomic test that analyses DNA mutations in tumors
- Impact – A mobile app that uses neurocognitive assessment tools to help diagnose concussion in real-time
- Ekso Bionics – Robotic exoskeletons that imitate the actions of muscles and and motors that move joints enabling paralysed patients to walk
- Reflexion Health – Using Kinect software and patient’s TVs to ensure they are doing their physical therapy exercises correctly
Opportunities are also being driven in our local market through a variety of organisations, institutions and healthcare startup collaborations – and some of them are being recognised internationally!
The SONNY movement and assessment platform, developed by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and local health technology company, Curve Tomorrow, was awarded first place at The Launch! session at Health 2.0 in 2014. The assessment and rehabilitation platform targeted at children with brain injury and movement disorders, incorporates gesture control, cloud and social gaming, allowing the efficient automated capture of more accurate movement measurements, to help inform the most appropriate rehabilitation program.
With a myriad of different paths to choose, what stands out about many of these businesses and solutions is that they focus on a solving a specific problem or issue.
